Important Notes
Please read before booking
Fitness: The living-root-bridge treks involve long stone stairways — the Nongriat double-decker is around 3,500 steps down and back up. A reasonable level of fitness makes it far more enjoyable; take the climb slow.
Rain & Leeches: Trails get slippery when wet. In the monsoon, wear grippy shoes and leech socks; we start early to beat the afternoon rain.
Stays: Villages like Nongriat offer simple, clean homestays — basic but wonderfully authentic, right by the root bridges and pools.
Guide: A local guide accompanies the trek for safety and stories. Carry water, snacks and a torch; some pools are perfect for a refreshing dip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before you book
This 4-day version adds a second night in Nongriat and a dedicated day to hike to Rainbow Falls, so you go deeper and slower - more swimming, more rainforest, and time to enjoy the village rather than a quick in-and-out.
Rainbow Falls is a tall waterfall plunging into a vivid turquoise pool, a further 1.5-2 hour hike beyond the double-decker bridge. On sunny days rainbows form in its spray - hence the name. Its remoteness keeps it pristine.
From Nongriat it is a moderate 1.5-2 hour forest hike each way, with ups and downs and a few stream crossings. It is more than the bridge walk but very rewarding; a guide leads the way.
The homestays are basic but clean and welcoming, with home-cooked Khasi meals. There is limited electricity and no luxury - that simplicity, plus the setting, is exactly what makes staying over so special.
Yes - the pools below the double-decker bridge and at Rainbow Falls are superb for swimming in the dry season. Carry quick-dry clothes; the water is refreshingly cool.
October to April for the clearest water, safest trails and best swimming. The monsoon swells the streams and makes steps slippery with leeches, so we avoid peak-monsoon departures.
Moderate - you tackle the ~3,500-step descent and ascent plus the Rainbow Falls hike over separate days, so it is spread out. Reasonable fitness and steady legs are enough; take it at your own pace.
Network is very limited to non-existent in the valley. Enjoy the digital detox - it is part of the charm - and download any maps or music beforehand.
