Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal is a year-round destination — but the "best" time depends entirely on what you want: snow, blossoms, green valleys or the high, wild roads of Spiti. Here's a month-by-month breakdown.

From snowbound Shimla to the cold desert of Spiti, Himachal covers an enormous range of altitudes and climates. Pick your month by the experience you''re after.

December to February: snow season

This is when Shimla, Kufri, Manali, Solang and Dalhousie turn white. It''s the time for snowfall, sledging and cosy log fires. Roads to high areas like Rohtang close, but the Atal Tunnel keeps snowy Sissu accessible. Winter is also the only season for the surreal frozen Spiti experience via Kinnaur.

March to June: the sweet spot

Spring brings apple and cherry blossoms; by April–June the weather is warm, pleasant and green — ideal for the classic Shimla–Manali circuit, Dharamshala and family trips. This is peak tourist season, so book stays early. From June, the high passes and summer Spiti and Lahaul routes begin to open.

Spiti''s summer window (roughly June to October) is short — plan around it.

July to September: monsoon

The lower hills get heavy rain and the occasional landslide, so the classic circuits can be disrupted. But there''s a silver lining: this is the best window for high-altitude Spiti and Ladakh-style road trips, which sit in the rain-shadow and stay relatively dry. Trekkers also love the lush valleys.

Rule of thumb: monsoon is risky for Shimla–Manali, but it''s prime time for Spiti and the high passes.

October to November: golden season

Post-monsoon, the skies clear, the crowds thin and the valleys glow with autumn colour and apple harvests. It''s arguably the most photogenic time for Kinnaur and Spiti before winter closes the roads, and a lovely, calm time for the hill stations.
